So, at the park today, my B-i-L would not allow his two young daughters to dig their fingers in the dirt, kick at the dirt, or basically get dirty in any way. My husband and I don't feel like it's bad for a girl to get dirty. Whenever a boy gets all dirty, people usually respond with "Well, that's how a boy is supposed to be!"

Is that not true for girls in your family? How do you feel about daughters or future daughters getting outside and getting dirty (if they like that sort of thing)?

ETA: I know for a fact that this is how he personally feels, not that his wife is domineering and "forcing" him to not allow the girls to get dirty.

Actually, it can be very good for ANY child to be able to get dirty. Amazingly, that is one of the ways that the body builds immunity to things. Although I'm not a doctor, it appears that certain things like allergies and asthma are far more prevalent than they used to be. My medical doctor does happen to agree with me on this, BTW. Our society is "too clean". That's not to say we should not maintain good personal hygene for both ourselves and our children. They, and we, should keep ourselves clean. But playing in the dirt is part of being a child.

Please let kids be kids. Too many poeple tend to seriously over-protect kids these days.

When my mother was 10 years old, in 1943, her parents were running a cafe. Every day when she got home from school, her job was to go out to the chicken coop, and kill, pluck, and clean 10 chickens for the cafe. Did she get dirty? Yes. So???. Did that make her non-feminine?
No way. She's 78 years old now, and still going strong.

When my two daughters were growing up, they each had to help with certain things, including yard work. Such as helping to pick up doggie dirt in the backyard, helping to pull weeds, etc.

It taught them valuable lessons about life. Did they get dirty? Yes. Did they get cleaned up afterwards? YES. Did it make them non-feminine? NO. They are now both grown, Christian women with husbands and children of thier own.

Hopefully, I didn't get too far a-field here. In summary, my prayer is that people will let thier children be children, as long as they are raising them in a Godly and Biblical manner. That's the MOST important part.

God Bless You.

from a medical point of view, i agree with bkj1981. i lived in dirt. i'll spare the gross relationships i had with dirt as a kid but at age 40 i have a strong immune system. i had friends who got equally dirty...and disgusting. it's amazing what boys will put in their mouths. so i agree, kids need some dirt in their lives for a strong immune system.

as far as the questions is concerned, i see nothing wrong with girls playing in dirt. i have no kids, but if i did, i would not stop them from playing in dirt. i've known a lot of girls who played in dirt and got dirty with the boys. girls are kids too and dirt is one of the cheapest toys out there and the most versatile.

It only bothers me when my daughters decide to play in the dirt wearing their Easter dresses.

Your BIL has unrealistic expectations from his girls. All kids, regardless whether boy or girl, will dig in dirt... they are exploring their world and learning. When the weather is nice, I just tell my girls to put blue jeans on and don't come in the house until my wife or I inspect and approve entry.

What is a B-i-L by the way?

BIL = Brother-In-Law
DIL = Daughter-In-Law
DH = Dear Husband
DW = Dear Wife

Etc.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, I gotta agree with the others. Your bro-in-law has gone over the edge on this one. There's nothing at all wrong with kids playing in the dirt. Did he give any rationale for this? Unless one has OCD or some odd hang-ups about cleanliness and propriety, doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

I wouldn't want my daughter(s) doing it. Hardly seems feminine and ladylike. Son(s), though, no problem.
God bless,
Crushmaster.

They are not ladies, they are children! It is in some way discriminating to allow boys to play in the mud, but to forbid girls just because they are girls.

Dirt is good! Who said this:

quote:

"By the tune of a billion deaths, we have earned our right to live with the earth."

Some old book I read about a hundred year ago (only thing the "stuck" obviously).

...H.G. Wells "War of the Worlds." Probably got the quote wrong.

But anyway... dirt is good.
