I love to color. However, for a long time I couldn't find coloring books for adults. I don't mean those kinds of coloring books but ones that weren't Sesame St. or Dora. Boy, did I find tons at Dover Publications. They have Op-Art coloring books, flowers of the US where they have a huge picture of the flowers and tell the name, where they are found and other cool things underneath, dinosaurs, horses and other cool things. Definitely not for kids because they are not really big pictures, they have lots of intricate details. What I mean by kids is 3-5 year olds. Maybe 7 or 8, depending on how well they can color. They also have many made of velum paper. You color them different colors on each side and then you put it in a window. It looks like stained glass. The book I have is Tiffany Stained Glass pictures. They show what the windows look like on the front, inside back and back cover so if you wish, you can use the colors on the windows or use your own colors. You can color on the velum with crayons, colored pencils or water colors. So you can have fun coloring and learn something while you are at it. Some of the books are beautiful!

I have a box of 96 crayons (crayola is the best kind in my opinion) and some water colors. I also have colored pencils with very soft lead, which are my favorites. I also make cards so I use these in my card making too.

One year what I did is colored some snowflakes. I have a book with some awesome snowflakes. I took the pages out, tried to get some clear plastic frames to put them in, had to cut some of the white around the pictures, and gave them as Christmas presents. A friend of mine had a 60's room so I made her an Op-Art page. I saw those darn shapes in my sleep for weeks! LOL She loved it!

Let's hear from some people who color!

Thanks for the feedback. Someone said to me that they liked to color because it kept their hands busy and then they weren't eating. I liked that one.

When I was growing up, in the 60's, we used to have coloring contests in the summer outside on our porches. I always got an A but then come to think of it, so did everyone else. I guess no one wanted to make anybody feel bad if they didn't stay in the lines. We had tons of coloring books. Not only do I have a 64 box of Crayola's but I have Pearlized, 3 color in one crayon crayons, and others. Every so often Crayola comes out with some really fun crayons and I have to have them.

For Christmas last year one of the teachers in my school got a Dover book of Mandala's for me as a gift. I love it! My favorite ones are the Velum ones though. They look so pretty when they are colored in. Can you tell I like to color?

I also love to do Dot-To-Dot but most of the books are for young children. I found one in a funky children's store in my town that has numbers from 1-100 on some pictures, even numbers, odd numbers, letters, this is not your little kids book. You can't tell at all what the pictures are until you do them. I got the book for a friend of mines son but I may make copies for me or just get a book for me.

I do. I have some of the coloring books you are talking about. I love the dover ones that are like paisley and tile type of patterns. I have a butterfly stained glass one. I could kick myself for not getting the ancient egypt one the craft store had on clearance

I agree Crayola is the best...I just discovered their twistables line...love the twistables colored pencils.

For me its very stress relieving and is a way to express myself with the colors and all

I just got a catalog from Dover that is all coloring books. I am in hog heaven! LOL I saw so many books that I want. I haven't tried those twistable colored pencils yet. I may have to get me some. I love colors and lots of colors. That's why I love to stamp, make cards, make jewelry and color. I am a craftaholic! LOL

I have found some very interesting adult/teen coloring books but mostly I draw my own images and then color them in. I have my Wacom tablet set to color just like using a colored pencil. The harder I press the darker and wider the line, for instance. I love prismacolor pencils. Crayons I save for large bulleting board size artwork. Mostly because it can color a large space quickly and fairly consistantly. There is a form of art that uses layers of colored wax, sort of a step up from crayon coloring. I've never tried it.

I just got some coloring pages that were beautiful on-line. I will send links later as I can't do it and do this at the same time, I don't think. I will try and see what happens. I make cards so these will be cool to use on my greeting cards. I'll share! LOL

It looks like a lot of it got together in one link. There are 5 links.

I like to color too! I need to do it more often. Coloring gives me something to concentrate on, so that I'm not bothered by negative thoughts. Maybe I need to do it when I'm tempted to overeat too.

Love to color! Crayola is the best for crayons, but Prisma colored pencils sharpen better than Crayola.

Having a 9 year old that loves to color is very helpful too! Our favorite thing to color? Taking a sheet of regular copy paper and drawing our own pictures is always great fun!

Last week and the week before I got to spend a lot of time helping 4th graders get a coloring project done so they could finish the batiking portion of the project for their art classes this week!

Blessings,

Garsy

ok coloring fans. If you like you may print and color this dragonfly. It would be cool to see how different people like to treat this line work.

We can't post what we color, can we, because I would. Check out the sites that I found. I listed them above your post.

I use rubber stamps to make cards and other things and I frequently color those images in. It's nice because I can color my favorite images over and over in different ways.

I love my Prismacolor pencils and I sometimes use markers or watercolors.

For those who use the Prismacolors, do you use mineral spirits for blending? I love this technique and never get bored with it.

Right now I'm trying to resist the urge to buy Copic markers but I do love the blended looks achieved with them.

I think I have Prismacolor pencils. I also make cards and color in the stamped images. I also use markers and crayons. I have crayons with glitter, 3 color crayons, pearlescence crayons, etc. all from Crayola. I have water colors too.

Mineral spirits for blending? Where would I buy mineral spirits? We don't have a craft store in my town, we only have Walmart which is making their craft dept. smaller in their remodel. We so need a craft store! I've never tried that.

I do know about the Copic markers. I've heard of them from some other stampers. What is so different about them as compared to other markers?

This is the product I use called Gamsol. You can get odorless mineral spirits at a hardware store I believe but the Gamsol is "artist grade" and has a nice felt top that you can just touch your blending stumps (you need these too, sold right below the gamsol in that link) to. Then all you need is a piece of fine sandpaper or even an emery board to file the color off your stump to go to the next color.

Copic markers are alcohol based ink (I think that's the right terminology) that don't leave an overlap where you've colored 2 sections right next to each other and can be layered for shading without damaging the paper (pilling, rolling, etc.)

You can probably find tons of Copic and Gamsol tutorials on youtube and www.splitcoaststampers.com is a wonderful resource for tutorials and techniques.

Here's an image colored with Copics. Note the reflection in the water...Link

Here's another that shows the shading and dimension you can get with skin and hair...Link

Geez, I'm talking myself more and more into them.

Wow. Here's an impressive one colored with pencils and blended with Gamsol and stumps...Link

Oh! To clarify, that wasn't *my* artwork (I wish), it was just some examples of what I was trying to describe. I don't want anyone to think I'm that talented.

I brought up the idea of using Gamsol to blend the pencils in my art class last week. THanks so much.
