PLACEBO: In medicine a drug with no real effect: a drug containing no active ingredients given to a patient participating in a clinical trial in order to assess the performance of a new drug.

It may also may be given to patients because it may benefit them psychologically to believe they are receiving treatment.

Basically you shouldn't tell them at all as it would defeat the purpose. Then again it would be an interesting experiment to find out whether those taken an expensive placebo felt better than those taken a cheap one instead.

Aha ... glad you mentioned the matter of cost and effectiveness.

There was a program on the radio this morning. In tests they gave three groups different medicines. One lot of patients had expensive medecines to treat their ailments. One lot had cheap placebos whilst the third group had expensive placebos.

Of course, neither group knew it was a placebo. They believed they were taking expensive and not so expensive medecines.

Those taking the "expensive medecines" (i.e. the expensive placebo) faired better and showed better improvements than those taking the cheaper "medecines" (placebo). Apparently, those taking the cheaper product believed that because their medecines were cheaper they would not work. And of course it didn't. Even though it was a placebo. It's all in the mind really.

All this raises the ethical question as to whether it is OK to lie to a patient and give him a placebo.

I think we've pushed this discussion to its limit - don't you think?

Unless of course you wish to sell me one paper clip?

LOL, just give your address and I will PM you one!

BTW, I think that the same holds true on other things too! What makes something better than another, the price? For example, do you think twice before buying a CD that is half price than a full priced one because the other one is way cheaper?

Years ago I attended a marketing and pricing seminar.

We were given fictional products to develop, cost the production, packaging transport etc ... and finally to fix a price for it to sell at.

We did all our costings and added a percentage for profit.

We were told this was wrong. We should add all our costs (production, transport, advertising etc ...) and then add a 100% mark-up to reach the final selling price.

The reason being - if I sell you a product for $2 - say a shirt, (which includes my profit) you'd think it's cheap. Whereas if I sell you the same product for $4 you'd feel that because you paid more you got yourself a good product. Something of value.

Talking of shirts - you can buy shirts in the UK for £100 each (that's about $200) or you can buy a shirt for £4 or so. Quite a difference don't you think? Yet, at the end of the day - it is still a shirt.

Is it really true that most boys pick on girl's they like?

Probably, although I never hit anyone that I liked. I associated hitting with not liking, so I usually tried to be very nice to boys I liked.

Do you use teeth whitener?

If so, what kind do you use? (i.e. Crest White Strips, or Aqua Fresh Whitening Trays, or Whitening Toothpaste)

Should Hawaii get a rail system to ease traffic congestion?

What shampoo do you use?

Do you use conditioner in your hair?

Does your shampoo/conditioner make your hair shiny and full of body like the commercials?

Do you think it's necessary for guys to pluck and shape their eyebrows like women do?

How much formula do you mix with two ounces of water?

Why aren't there more hours in the night then in the day?

Why does it have to get cold in the house when it gets cold outside?

I am good cooking bacon and eggs.

If I had company over I would probably just order out for pizza instead.

No, I do not use teeth whitener at all.

Hawaii should get a rail system, but especially if it went inter-island.

I do not know on the formula. In some places it is night all day long! If you don't have heat then it gets cold inside too.
