The insulin resistance diet suggests no more than 30 carbs for a meal and 15 for snacks. Never eat carbs by itself, have protein with it. Like cheese and crackers for a snack. Some people will be able to have more carbs than others.

I stick to 25-30 carbs per meal, and about 15 per snack. They also shouldn't be carbs from processed sugars or flours, I eat only whole wheats(pasta, bread) and brown rice.

In the beginning I suggest no cheating whatsoever, it's really hard but you have to get your body accustomed to the LC diet and you can't do that if you cheat. When I start back to the diet I go for 10-14 days without fruit, starchy veggies, juice, etc... and only eat about 40-50 carbs a day(Atkins recommends 20 but I can't do that right now while I'm nursing).

Yea, me too. You can eat the apples, but eat them protein. Have apples and cheese.

I had- Breakfast 2 scrambled eggs with feta cheese and spinach- 2 carbs Lunch- One slice of bread with roast beef and cheese- 14 carbs Snack- 4 Oreos(bad, I know)- 20 carbs Dinner- Beef and Broccoli- approx. 6 Salad- approx 3 Brown rice(1/3 c)- 14 THIS is a good carb counter

Also, make sure that you are getting enough carbs. If you get too few, you'll feel sick and sluggish, the same as if you eat too many. Shoot for 30 g of carbs per meal and 15 for snack. Also, you should not be eating meals closer than 2 hours apart. That will give your body time to process and digest the carbs from the previous meal. You can also find breads, whole grain, etc., and pastas, with a high fiber content...that will help as well. You can subtract fiber content from carb content in your calculations. If you want you can get fiber pills or a fiber drink to add to your diet. Cereals are hard for people with insulin resistance. I find that the best one for me is cheerios...the vanilla yogurt ones are pretty good. You can have 1/2C as a serving with milk and be good to go for carbs. You could also add some cheese, cottage or whatever, to your breakfast to balance out the carbs as well. It really helps if you pay attention to the labels on foods so that you'll know what a serving size is and what the carb content is for it. Blessings, Kim

Sorry if this is a derail, but I'm interested in what people with PCOS has to say about my current situation. I recently went into the doctor who suspected I had PCOS because I was having a variety of symptoms that seemed to indicate it. I developed hair where I shouldn't. I started to struggle severely with my weight which started with me going from a D to a G, and then I gained weight in my lower half. I tried low-carb diets and did Jenny Craig which I couldn't justify the cost for only a half a pound loss a week. I also tried a generally healthy reduced calorie diet and running for almost three months, and I was only able to lose 3 pounds. I have almost constant fluid retention in my hands and feet. My periods had been somewhat irregular for the past ten years (but I was completely regular before the age of 21). My mom thought I might have a thryoid condition because of a family history, and the fact that I started being very sensitive to cold. I also noticed that a fluid that reminded me of corn syrup would come out of my breasts, which I understand is somewhat unusual considering I've never been pregnant. My doctor did all the hormonal tests, including the LH/FH (or whatever that was), androgen levels, and a few others , but all came out normal. I also had an abdominal CT scan, which I was told everything came out "clear". My doctor said that he knows there is something going on, he just doesn't know what it is. I'm just wondering if all PCOS patients have irregular blood tests, or would anything show up on a CT scan if that was the issue. I'm scheduled to see an endocrinologist, but I've had bad experiences in which doctors assume that I'm either depressed or that I must just be looking for an excuse to be heavy.

Low carbing may help PCOS but not everyone wants to go down that route... You could always start a new thread for Low Carbing in the women's folder and ask the mods if it can be left there ~ or you can subscribe to it so that when/if you click on 'My Forums' it'll show if there are any new posts.

Thyroid was normal. Both in July and October... I'm not sure of all the specific tests, but my EOB has 9 different tests listed, though I think one was just a regular CBC. The fluid from my breasts was a new thing (at least I think it was because I had never noticed it before), in between the doctor's appointment with the hormonal tests in early October and the one when I went back a week later to set up the referral and CT scan. My regular doctor said my prolactin levels were normal, which my understanding was that they should have been elevated to have that happen.

((Wendy)) To make a long story short, it sounds like you do have PCOS. As stated before, this is a "cafeteria syndrome." For me, the symptoms were weight gain, wonky periods and a little bit of oddness with the hair being where it sholdn't be. I've never had the androgen test done, and not all "cysters" have cysts! (if that was what the scan was supposed to look for!) The fluid? Sounds odd to me, and I'm glad you're having that checked. Could be an absess of some sort, or just some of the hormonal wackiness we're prone to.

On the diet front, i will simply say that a) low carb works for some, but not all and b) the number and type of carbs depend on your plan. I prefer South Beach because there is no counting of grams, and it acknowledges the difference between "bad carbs" (sugar) and "good carbs" (veggies!)
