This is a spinoff from the "Who owns a baby name" thread. How far would you go for uniqueness of your child's name....would you stop at unique or would go all the way to what some consider "weird?" If you really like a name, how stubborn would you be about using, even if say, you were in a small community, and five babies born that year were named the name you liked, and they're all going to Kindergarten together, and your child would be the SIXTH child with that name, would you still use it? Do(es) your child(ren) have (an) unusual or common name(s)? What are some common names you like? What are some more unusual names you like?

I wouldn't go ridiculous, but what I think is beautiful others might think is weird so its hard to balance between the two. I had picked out Xavier for a name when Thing 1 was a baby and my mother threw a fit. *shrug* quote:

I wouldn't. I've changed baby name ideas for that very reason. Thing 1's name isn't common, but it's familiar. Thing 2 has a common name for boys and girls and he HATES it. quote:
What are some common names you like? Abigail, Ashley, Bethany, and Valerie. quote:
What are some more unusual names you like? Octavious, Winter, Keegan, Garrick, Journey, Draco, Sirius...

I don't have a kid but am a fan of more normal kinds of names. I think it's funny when parents give their kid an unusual name, then whine that there are no necklaces, pens, or mugs with that name on it! That said ... I think my cousins did right by naming their kid Jeevan Thomas (or Zeevan ... I think it was a misprint in an e-mail) because if he doesn't like his first name, he can just go by J.T. or Tommy.

I wouldn't go very far for unique. I have a niece with a "unique" name and I feel sorry for her when she hits middle school and high school. My other niece has a boys name and while I don't really mind some girls being named a boys name this one is definitely a boy name. I would use a name if I liked it no matter how many kids would have that name in school. They are only in school for such a short time in their lives anyway and they may never see those kids again later in life. My kids names are common for the time they were born but the names are not being used as much now.

I don't care for unique spelllings of common names either. I not only had an uncommon, not weird, first name I also had an uncommon long last name that had to spelled to everyone when giving it. How relieved I was to marry someone with a pretty common easy to spell last name, or so I thought, people still don't know how to spell that last name and they can't pronounce it sometimes. I just don't get it. I just spell my kids names to people when I have to give them even though they are spelled just like they sound. With so many people changing the spellings of names these days you just don't know how they spell them.

I like classic type names...and that's what I feel we have mostly chosen with our kids. We have also tried to incorporate family members names into the mix too. I have a few that are top of the list as far as where they fall, and a few that are way down on the list. The year our first was born, Jacob took over the #1 spot on the SS's list for that year and kicked Michael down to #2...it has since stayed in that spot. However, we really haven't run into that many Jacob/Jake's...maybe a few, but not that many. Hannah and Emma are also both popular names for their years/ages, but we still like them. Jackson is coming up on the charts in popularity, but I chose that name a long time ago (when I was a teenager), and it is my Grandpa's name. So again I didn't care where it fit on the list, I still like it. Really the most original we got so far is Justice. I have loved that name ever since I first heard it a few years ago, and have put it in the back of my mind. It had to grow on Paul, but our youngest definitely fits that name well!!! If we have another boy then the top contender is probably Charles/Charlie. (Again, it's a family name). If we have another girl then the top contender is Audra. (Yet again, a family name) My little brother has two girls that are so sweet and lovely...yet they have very odd/weird names. They are Hebrew names and very hard for the average person to pronounce and spell.

Our kid's names are "unique" in America, but we didn't pick them for uniqueness. We picked them from dh's culture, for their meaning and significance. It doesn't matter what culture we picked from, in one country their names would stand out, so that wasn't a consideration. My first son quite possibly could be the 6th or the 10th kid in his school with the same name, if we ever go to dh's country. One of our children's name is unique in dh's culture, but it is a play on a more common name, using reasonable spelling in his language. It too was not for uniqueness-value but because of a very specific meaning we wanted. Our kids are not hermits, so they've had the chance to be bullied about their names....but no bullying has happened. The one true bully we ran into was driving his mother to distraction with his behavior, but even he never used my son's names as a reason to be hurtful. The only real "issue" is that I have to spell out the names to everyone, but since my parent's last name is a three-letter common English word and *they're* regularly asked to spell it, I don't think it's that a big deal. One of my sisters has one of the most common girl's names in the Western world and people were constantly misspelling and mispronouncing hers when she was a kid. So...it's gonna happen, apparently, no matter what your name is.

I'm the only one of me I know. Garsy is an extremely unusual name! quote:
How far would you go for uniqueness of your child's name....would you stop at unique or would go all the way to what some consider "weird?" My children have middle of the road names. Not to uncommon, but not in the top 20 either. However there are several uncommon names that we considered that some would see as weird. I also know many children with extremely unusual names (to me anyway) and honestly some of them are gorgeous and others are, well, not. quote:
If you really like a name, how stubborn would you be about using, even if say, you were in a small community, and five babies born that year were named the name you liked, and they're all going to Kindergarten together, and your child would be the SIXTH child with that name, would you still use it? Likely not. I like that my kids have unique names. I'd find a different name. I wouldn't get bent out of shape about the others either. Baby naming is a first come first serve kinda thing. Now if someone wants to use the name of one of my children for their newborn - well there is really nothing I can do about that. After we named my youngest ds Ethan - my cousin named her son Ethan, and a friend at church named their son Ethan. After we name our youngest Zoe - thinking it was a relatively uncommon name - one of my best friends used it for their dd after we told them her name (their baby is several years younger than my dd) AND she ended up with 2 other Zoe's in her school - one of which was in her grade. quote:
Do(es) your child(ren) have (an) unusual or common name(s)? Uncommon yes. Unusual not really. Ty - NOT Tyler, or Tyson or Tyrone. Just Ty. THAT takes some explaining on a regular basis. My dd Aryn's name often takes a couple of out-loud spellings before people realize she is not a boy and her name is not spelled Erin. Sounds like it, but not the same spelling. Ethan is likely the most common name we have, but not overwhelmingly common enough for him to have 5 Ethan's in his classroom. I think that maybe there are 5 in the entire 500 kid k-5 school. quote:
What are some common names you like? Anna, Noah, Grace. quote:
What are some more unusual names you like? I guess I don't consider these names unusual as much as uncommon. I love the name Ida and would have used it for one of my daughters had my husbands grandmother not thrown a hissy fit because we wanted to name our baby after my grandmother (whom just passed away 5 months before dd was born) and we didn't want to use her first name even as a middle name. That determined for us that it was just easier not to use family names at all, because someone was going to be disappointed in the choice. In fact that eliminated Noah for us as well. There are a pair of brothers at our school named Khai and Khoi. But I think it's the boys I like more than their names! I found it interesting that there are certain names that go in streaks it seems. My daughter played basketball in a league with about 16 girls between the two teams. There were 2 Grace's, 2 Ashley's, 2 Zoe's, and 2 Rachel's. My 10 year old ds played in a grouping of about 20 boys. There were 3 Cole's, 2 Joshua's, 2 Dillion's, 2 Jake's. Blessings, Garsy

What are some common names you like? Judah (becoming quite common around here), Timothy, David, Anna/Hannah, Sarah, Elizabeth, variations on Mary. And of course, Josiah. quote:
What are some more unusual names you like? Hosanna, Zion, Apphia, Barnabus. When I was pregnant with my youngest, my oldest insisted that if the baby was a girl we should name her Jerusalem.

Oh and there was the time that I was told by a government official that I was spelling my own name wrong. It was spelled the same way on all of the documents I gave them, from my birth certificate to my college diploma to my library card. Plus I THINK I know how to spell my own name. Aryn's unique spelling was out of necessity. I INSISTED on the name Erin/Aryn - It was the only name that even worked in my brain the entire time I was pregnant with my daughter. At that time I was completely unwilling to change my mind. This was the name my grandmother told me I should name my little girl during one of her few lucid moments after her aneurysm. She grasped my hand and whispered "Name the baby Aryn." She didn't specify a spelling or if it was a boy or girl preference, but I'm certain she said Erin/Aryn/Aaron. My husband was going through a tough time as well and had just worked through some serious issues. He felt like he was starting over with a new beginning thus my daughters middle name means new beginning AND starts with an A. WELL if we had used the Erin spelling her initials would have been EAT. Those initials were NOT something I wanted to saddle a young girl with!! That would have been just cruel. So I compromised and we decide to use a lesser known Celtic based spelling of the name - Aryn. Blessings, Garsy

My criteria for a name are: 1. People have to have heard it before (so, not made up) 2. People have to be able to pronounce it 3. I must not be able to count off half a dozen people I know with that same name (or even variations/nicknames of the same name). 4. Traditional spellings are usually best. Of common names, I like Madison, Sophia, Emma, Jacob, Dillon, and Matthew. Of unique names, I like Elainna, Hadassah, Octavia, Dorian, and Matthias. 3Cap, I really like the name Jerusalem, for a girl, too

I can't remember what year it was in school but one of my teachers told me I spelled my name wrong. It actually took my mom talking to her to tell her that I was spelling my name correctly. My name doesn't follow the i before e except after c rule and it is spelled incorrectly by people all the time.

I decided to do a little research into the school my kids attend and the names of the kids that go there. Since I have a student directory and all and know a lot of the kids it was actually pretty easy. Here are the most popular names by grade level. Kindergarten: Boys: Nicholas (in a couple different spellings), Aaron, Owen, Benjamin, Nathan, Jacob, Michael, Aiden, Brayden, and Kyle. Girls: Mary-Catherine, Madeline and Hallie. First Grade: Boys: Donavon, Ethan, Dominic, William, and Sam. Girls: Emily, Elizabeth, Aliana, Bailey (in a couple different spellings), Haylee (in a couple different spellings), Madison, Kaylee, and Hadley. Second Grade: Boys: Connor, Logan, Owen, TJ, Jordan, Sam, and Caleb. Girls: Arianna, Chloe, Sophia, and Annie Third Grade: Boys: Dylan, Ryan, Zachary, Logan, and Nicholas Girls: Kaitlyn, Jessica, Ashley and Zoe. 4th Grade: Boys: Connor, Jacob, Austin, Tanner, Cole and Hunter Girls: Olivia, Madison, Sarah, Samantha, and Allison 5th Grade: Boys: Nicholas, Chris, Dylan and William. Girls: Madison, Elizabeth, Rachel, Emma, Megan, Sarah, Olivia Abigail and Lyndsay (WITH that spelling) I'll be back later with some of the more unique names and a few of my faves. Blessings, Garsy

I guess it is the "in" thing to name your children after various alcoholic beverages I've seen that too. I got an email about a child named Le-ah; pronounced Ledashah.

Names are always an amusing topic for me as a teacher. Here are a few: Olimuyiwa, Unique (now, that's unique), Andravious, Kentavious, Martavious, Luquavious (do we see a pattern here?), and my favorite....Le-a - pronouced Ledasha, because the "dash" isn't silent. Seriously. And Mama gets really upset that people don't get it. And a few others: Rheachel, Raychle, Racheale -- all pronounced Rachel.

Oops! I must have skipped that post! There really is a girl at our middle school named that. I wonder if she is the one in the email or if her mom got the idea from someone famous. Of course, remember Frank Zappa the singer? Didn't he name his daughter Moon Unit?? And then there's Apple - Gwenyth Paltrow's daughter. And George on Seinfeld wanted to name his kid 7. My name is Laurie, and people have always called me everything but -- Laura, Lora, Lori. I don't think Yankees know how to say Laurie right - they always say Lori. But when a nurse started calling me Louise once, I drew the line. Where do you get Lousie from that????
